  21. If you have my artistic abilities, creating freehand icons with the OS/2 Icon 
  22. Editor is beyond your capability.  Therefore, you will need to collect a 
  23. library of icons that help you make your desktop both easier to use and more 
  24. attractive. 
  25.  
  26. OS/2 icons are becoming plentiful.  In fact, the icons that are distributed 
  27. with IconEase are public domain icons that were downloaded from Compuserve. 
  28.  
  29. Maintaining icon libraries can be a clumsy and disk consuming effort, though. 
  30. Each icon is minimally 888 bytes large.  However, many hard drives allocate 
  31. space in 1024 and 4096 increments.  Therefore, the space that the icons occupy 
  32. on your disk can be much larger than their apparent size. 
  33.  
  34. Keeping track of the icons and associating their image with their names tends 
  35. to be problematic, as well.

  38. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. How IconEase Can Help ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  39.  
  40. IconEase addresses the most troublesome elements of OS/2 icon maintenance. 
  41.  
  42. A very advanced compression algorithm is used to store multiple icons in a 
  43. single file.  That way the amount of  disk space required to maintain large 
  44. libraries of icons is reduced.  The electronically distributed version of 
  45. IconEase houses 55 icons in very little space.  You can order a library of over 
  46. 3300 public domain icons obtained from Compuserve and formatted for IconEase. 
  47. These icons are compressed into less than one megabyte of disk space.  You can 
  48. also send your favorite icons in with your registration to be formatted for use 
  49. by IconEase.  Please, see the registration form section of this help file.

  51. IconEase makes use of the OS/2 notebook control so that you can access and 
  52. manage the icons in the compressed file in a very natural way.  Icons can be 
  53. quickly previewed on the notebook page.  You don't have to waste a lot of time 
  54. fishing around for an icon that you want to use.  By using the controls on the 
  55. notebook page, you can easily copy an icon to the OS/2 clipboard where it can 
  56. be used to change a Workplace Shell object's icon.  Also, you can launch an 
  57. icon editor from the notebook page icon preview and make changes to existing 
  58. icons before you pass them to the WPS object settings icon editor.

  60. Hopefully, IconEase lives up to its name by making icon management easier in 
  61. OS/2.

  64. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Changing the Icon for an Object ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  65.  
  66. Use the following procedure to change the icon for an OS/2 Workplace Shell 
  67. object: 
  68.  
  69. o Open the settings for the object 
  70.  
  71.    - Right mouse button click the object icon 
  72.    - Left mouse button click the arrow next to the Settings menu item 
  73.  
  74. o Surface the General settings notebook page by left mouse button clicking the 
  75.   General tab 
  76. o Left mouse click the Edit button in the icon section of the General settings 
  77.   notebook page 
  78.  
  79. o Left button double click your IconEase object 
  80. o Preview the icon you want to use for the desktop object 
  81. o Left mouse click the Send to Clipboard button 
  82.  
  83. o Left mouse click the settings Icon Editor title bar 
  84. o Press and hold the Shift key and press the Insert key

  87. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5. Use of the Notebook Page ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  89.  To obtain general help, press F2 now. 
  90.  
  91. Icons are alphabetically organized on each notebook page.  You can place the 
  92. input focus on the notebook page by left button mouse clicking the upper right 
  93. hand corner of the opened page.  When the notebook page has the input focus, 
  94. you can use the up and down arrow keys on your keyboard to move through the 
  95. tabs of the notebook. 
  96.  
  97. Once you have highlighted the tab you wish to open, press the enter key.  That 
  98. tab will surface and icons that begin with that tab character will be displayed 
  99. in the list portion of the icon combo box control. 
  100.  
  101. You can also click a notebook tab to bring it to the surface. 
  102.  
  103. The notebook page serves four main functions: 
  104.  
  105. o Icon selection 
  106. o Icon preview 
  107. o Save icon to clipboard 
  108. o Launch the icon editor 
  109.  
  110.  
  111. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 5.1. The Send to Clipboard Button ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  112.  
  113. After you have previewed an icon, you can send it to the clipboard by pressing 
  114. the Send to Clipboard button. 
  115.  
  116. IconEase will send a bitmap of the icon to the clipboard.  This bitmap can be 
  117. used by any word processor or paint program that is able to paste OS/2 bitmaps. 
  118.  
  119. IconEase also sends two private clipboard formats that are understood by the 
  120. OS/2 Icon Editor program.  That way, you can easily change OS/2 Workplace Shell 
  121. object icons.

  126. You can launch the Icon Editor for the purpose of editing the the preview icon. 
  127. Of course, it is necessary to place an icon in the preview area first. 
  128.  
  129. Launch the OS/2 Icon Editor by pointing at the preview icon on the notebook 
  130. page and clicking the right mouse button. 
  131.  
  132. You can launch several concurrent Icon Editor sessions using IconEase.  Each 
  133. instance of the Icon Editor runs as a separate session.  That means you can 
  134. even close IconEase without disturbing the edit sessions.

  137. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Use of the Combo Box ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ

  139.  To obtain general help, press F2 now. 
  140.  
  141. The combination box is comprised of an entry field and a list box.  The list 
  142. box contains the names of all of the icons that begin with the tab letter of 
  143. the currently opened notebook page. 
  144.  
  145. You can use the entry box to perform the following functions: 
  146.  
  147. o Fast path open a new notebook page 
  148. o Position the current selection in the list box 
  149. o Preview an icon on the notebook page 
  150.

  154. Whenever the data in the entry field is completely selected (all characters are 
  155. highlighted,) you can type the notebook tab character for the page that you 
  156. wish to surface.

  158. You can quickly select the entry field characters by pressing the down arrow 
  159. key.  That loads a new listbox item into the entry field and fully selects it.

  164. Just type in the leftmost characters of an icon name.  IconEase will 
  165. automatically position and select the first item in the listbox that matches 
  166. what you have typed.

  171. After an icon is highlighted in the listbox, you can preview it at the top of 
  172. the notebook page.  Simply press the enter key or double click the list item.

  175. ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Startup Parameters for IconEase ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
  176.  
  177. IconEase will accept a single input parameter from the command line or from the 
  178. parameters entry field in its program object setting. 
  179.  
  180. You can enter the filename of an icon catalog that has been formatted for use 
  181. with IconEase.  In that way, you can easily manage multiple collections of icon 
  182. files.  You can order a collection of over 3300 public domain icons when you 
  183. register this shareware program.  You can also send in a 3 1/2" diskette 
  184. containing your favorite icons to be formatted for use with IconEase.  Please, 
  185. see the registration topic in this help file.

  187. If you do not input a filename, the filename that you entered does not exist or 
  188. will not open, then IconEase looks for a file named IconEase.Dat.  The search 
  189. is made in the following fashion:

  193. o By OS/2 default through the DPATH config.sys variable
